Specifications and Application Rates

Too many choices

I had an "oh knickers" moment when looking at my last invoice

One product comes in 5 different variants

  • SuperMegaUltraGrow 10.0.0 + 2.4Mg
  • SuperMegaUltraGrow 10.0.10 + 2.4Mg + 1.6Fe
  • SuperMegaUltraGrow 10.0.15 + 2.4Mg + 1.6Fe
  • SuperMegaUltraGrow 10.0.20 + 2.4Mg + 1.6Fe
  • SuperMegaUltraGrow 5.0.28

Just be careful to double check which mix is best for your needs. I was advised to get 5.0.28 (N.P.K) but actually ordered 10.0.20 - So we'll be a bit rich in N and lean in K so no great drama but frustrating nevertheless.

N.P.K? = Nitrogen . Phosphorus . Potassium - I'm not going to explain what they're for just remind you - measure twice cut once.

Application Rates

I often find that application rates are hidden in amongst the detail and invariably expressed in confusing units.

A bowling green is about 1500m^2 which is 0.15Ha - therefore move the decimal point and add half.
Or for my sprayer (3 tanks to the green) move the decimal point and add halve - three times.

When I get a new treatment I have started scrawling with a black marker the dose rate onto the container. I also prefer treatments that don't require delicate handling or precise doses.

I recently made an error skim reading this piece
"APPLICATION AND TIMING To increase drainage, dry out and firm up the playing surface. Apply 0.5Kg – 1Kg per m2, (5-10 tonnes per hectare). Hollow core or solid tine the area to a depth of up to 5cm and brush Super WonderStuff into the tine holes.
Super WonderStuff may be mixed with top dressing. To improve sward growth and reduce fertiliser use Apply 50 – 100gm per m2 on its own through spreader. Micro tine the surface and brush or drag the Super WonderStuff into the holes."

All I got was "Apply 50 – 100gm per m2" = 3 to 6 bags so ordered 6 bags - I should have ordered 10 bags because I should have been looking at the "0.5Kg – 1Kg per m2, (5-10 tonnes per hectare)" bit and adding one third of 5t/Ha as advised.

Double check and Ask again

My point is double check your rates and ask your advisor to explain the rate and application method.
